Let children experience Singapore’s heritage and multicultural vibrancy through experiencing what the “kampong spirit” is in Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s last installment of the A Voyage to Nanyang series, Balik Kampong
Long before Singapore’s skyline was dotted with skyscrapers, most Singaporeans lived in kampongs or villages. It was a simpler life then, when you actually knew the name of your neighbours or could count on the people in your community for help if you needed it. It’s called kampong spirit, something that today’s kids might not know much about.
Why not bring the family on a little journey down memory lane on 9 and 10 November with Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s (SCO) last installment of the A Voyage to Nanyang series, Balik Kampong? It’s definitely worth knowing more about Singapore’s multicultural background and its journey to becoming a modernised “Lion City”, so here are the deets…
A throwback to the good old kampong days
Here’s the perfect opportunity for your kids to learn about keeping the kampong spirit alive. SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kong (as Ah De) has incorporated Malay and Indian instruments alongside traditional Chinese instruments to show how the different cultures’ instruments sound together. . Throwback Indian and Malay tunes such as the classic Bho Shambo (rearranged by Phang Kok Jun) will be performed by venu musician Raghavendran Rajasekaran with SCO dizi musician Tan Chye Tiong as well as Wang Chenwei’s Pelayaran, performed by gambus musician Ismahairie Putra together with SCO pipa musician Zhang Yin.
Pre-concert fun! (10 November only)
There’s no better way to get your little bundles of energy to simmer down than playing some old-school games before the show! At 1.30pm and 4pm, children can have fun playing hopscotch, five stones, chapteh, goli (marbles), and pick up sticks – it’s a surefire trick to get them even more excited about the performance ahead!
