How to get to Penang
When you’re travelling with kids, you’re going to want to skip the 10-hour bus ride and opt for a 1.5-hour flight. And since Penang is a popular (for good reason) destination, there are plenty of direct flights on a daily basis from Singapore.
Why Penang?
There’s bucketloads of exploring (and eating) to be done in Penang! Fun fact: Thanks to its thriving art and cultural scene as well as its luscious greenery, Penang’s capital, George Town, was recognised as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 2008. Culture, scenery and a great family vibe: Penang has it all in spades.
Whether you choose to spend the afternoons strolling along the heritage streets of George Town, snacking on nom-worthy handmade kueh, chowing down a plate of hor fun or taking in the uber Instagrammable famous street art (and snapping a few selfies along the way), there’s no shortage of things to do in Penang. Add a bustling flea market and night market shopping opps into the mix, and you’ve got yourself a fab fam holiday that ticks all the boxes for a perfect getaway.
And while you’re there, don’t forget to take in some of this charming destination’s history by heading to the Pinang Peranakan Mansion, where you’ll delve into plenty of fun facts about Peranakan architecture and traditions. And if it’s lunch with a view you’re after, then make sure you take the Penang Hill Railway to the top of Penang Hill. Our fave lunch destination? David Brown’s! This British colonial spot with a view and menu that can’t be beaten is a delish must.
No matter how much time you have in Penang, do make sure you have Made In Penang Interactive Museum on your to do list: it’s filled with magical murals and gorgeous displays for history buffs and kiddos alike.
Where to stay
With its stunning views of the beach and an easy drive from George Town, the award-winning DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang makes a great choice for families.
Located in the scenic Batu Ferringhi area, you can have your choice of sea or mountain view, both of which are, quite simply, stunning. Take advantage of the daily complimentary shuttle service to all the must-sees, including George Town, Gurney Drive and Batu Ferringhi Night Market to name a few. And if the little ones are still not tuckered out from a busy day of playing tourist, drop them off at the hotel’s Kids’ Club to chill out with new friends while you enjoy a cocktail or two at the bar.
The kiddie fun at DoubleTree Penang doesn’t end there either – there’s an actual teddy bear-themed museum, TeddyVille, and a children’s pool with its own beach on site.
Kids feeling peckish? Head to Makan Kitchen where you’ll find a huge range of local cuisines and flavours complete with a special kids’ section (because we all know how fussy kids can be at mealtimes!). Bonus: there are seasonal promos where kids dine for free with every paying adult!
Perks!
Book a family room or suite at DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang, and kids stay, dine and get access to TeddyVille Museum for free (up to 3 kids per family unit)!
There are so many reasons to make DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang your next family vacation destination: what are you waiting for?
