Sci|Art Lab + Studio was established in 2007 with the goal to immerse High School and Pre-University students in both sciences and the arts – bridging two cultures and building the future “third culture”. The 2-week course runs from July 25 – August 6 2021, and students receive 4 undergraduate UC credits that are transferable and useful when they apply to universities.
Together with UCLA’s Art|Sci Center, Design Media Arts and the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI), this program brings together world-renowned scientists, artists, professionals and instructors to provide a nourishing, yet challenging environment. The program is led and designed by Professor Victoria Vesna (Design Media Arts) and Professor James Gimzewski (Distinguished Professor, Chemistry) along with the Art Sci collective — a dedicated group of experienced instructors who have been teaching in the program for years.
Also, SciArt Lab + Studio is modelled after Dr Vesna’s UCLA online Honors Course, BioTech & Art and online studio course – Design Media Arts Special projects – BioNanotech & Art. The content, course work, and expectations are college-level and will maintain these parameters in its remote format. Every day will be devoted to a particular theme with required reading and students will be asked to maintain a blog/sketchbook that incorporates their own ideas in relation to the subject.
In 2020, we had successfully hosted the program virtually across different time zones in the US, Asia and Europe with satellite instructors in each time zone. After realizing the potential to share our passions with a much broader audience, we are reaching out to more countries around the world to let potential students gain a competitive edge in their university applications and have a taste of a university-level class. Each student will be placed in a ‘home group / team’ for intimate interaction with peers and instructors. As we progress, students will form small collaborative groups based on interest and work together towards a final project and presentation.
