Under the circus big top, the human body is pushed to its limits with death-defying stunts, impossible feats and unimaginable displays. Discover the science behind them!
There’s no shortage of exhibits for kids in Singapore and a new one just rolled up to Science Centre Singapore. Every kid in town knows and loves the usual fire tornadoes, cloud machine and KidsSTOP shenanigans at this great attraction (some even get to go on a holiday camp here!), but the new exhibit – Circus! Science Under the Big Top – is very interesting indeed. Step right up to uncover the science behind some of the most mind-boggling and death-defying circus acts ever witnessed in human history!
First opened in Toronto, Canada in 2001, this travelling exhibition has wowed more than 600,000 visitors across the world. Circus! Science Under the Big Top celebrates the heritage of modern circus, taking visitors back to its roots in 1768 when Englishman Philip Astley created a ring to bring together different performing acts.
Packed with 20 interactive exhibits, daredevils can wobble precariously across the high(ish) wire, contort into a box only 50cm high, and perform aerial tricks like a trapeze artist (it’s harder than you think!). Find out the tips to all these tricks from the helpful guides and understand the science behind being a real circus performer.
Swing by on a weekend to catch the magic performances at 3.30pm from now until 31 December. Aspiring magicians can learn the wonders of magic at a special workshop on 18 November and pick up tricks to impress their friends such as the “Vanishing Tissue” and “I Know Your Number”.
Don’t forget to check out the other three exhibitions that will be launched this year as part of Science Centre’s #unFOURgettable40 celebrations including Phobia2 (open now), Dialogue with Time – Embrace Ageing (10 November), and Above and Beyond (25 November) and investigate the science behind natural phenomena experienced in daily life.
