It\u2019s one of the first things you\u2019ll notice as a visitor to Thailand and one of the easiest ways to sound more polite (and more local) straight away.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re travelling in Bangkok or anywhere in Thailand with kids, this is also a great, simple cultural lesson you can pick up together. And the good news? It\u2019s really easy to understand.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are \u201cka\u201d and \u201ckrab\u201d?<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cKa\u201d (\u0e04\u0e48\u0e30) and \u201ckrab\u201d (\u0e04\u0e23\u0e31\u0e1a) are polite particles in the Thai language. And no, this is totally different to Singaporean \u201clah\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

They don\u2019t have a direct translation in English, but they\u2019re added to the end of sentences to make what you\u2019re saying sound polite and respectful.<\/span><\/p>\n

Think of them like a built-in \u201cplease\u201d or a \u201cpolite tone marker\u201d. It\u2019s something that softens your sentence and shows good manners.<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll hear them used all the time in everyday situations, especially in places like restaurants, shops and taxis.<\/span><\/p>\n
