This award recognises schools that nurture students with the best results for a UK education.
If you plan to call the UK home in the future, then finding a school that will help your children transition to the British curriculum will no doubt be top of your education wishlist. Tanglin Trust School has been recognised as the Best UK Pathway School in Singapore for two consecutive years for nurturing students with the best results for further studies in the UK. What are some of the key achievements, principles and strategies adopted by Tanglin that lead to this result?
As the winner of this award, Tanglin provides its students with opportunities to take their academic capabilities further. Tanglin students show solid understanding of foundational concepts, well-preparing them for (I)GCSE, A-Level, International Baccalaureate (IB), and beyond.
The judges were impressed with how Tanglin’s students show a very solid understanding of foundational concepts, well-preparing them for further studies after they graduate. Here’s why the school won Gold again this year.
1. British heritage, with international perspective
Tanglin is the oldest international school in Southeast Asia. 2022 marks the 97th year of the school providing British-based learning in Singapore, with an international perspective, to an expatriate community comprised primarily of UK passport holders. Also, importantly, as a not-for-profit school, all fees are devoted to providing an outstanding education to their students.
2. The highest standards, with a carefully curated British curriculum
Tanglin’s Infant, Junior, and Senior schools are inspected every three years, following UK Ofsted British Schools Overseas (BSO) standards. Not only that, the results of these inspections have been repeatedly described by UK inspectors as “Outstanding”, the highest possible grade that can be awarded.
Achieving outstanding accreditations on a regular basis is the result of a carefully curated curriculum, which draws strongly from the rigour of the English National Curriculum.
3. Dual pathways to prepare students for a range of further study, with consistently outstanding results
Tanglin is the only international school in Singapore to offer A-Level and IB programmes in Sixth Form, so students can choose the pathway best suited for them in order to prepare them for further study in the UK. The students’ exam results from Tanglin have been amongst the highest in Singapore for many years and vastly exceed UK and global averages.
The statistics speak for themselves:
2022 IB results
This year’s IB cohort achieved the school’s highest ever average Diploma score of 41.4 points, more than 9.4 points above the world average and 3.9 points higher than the Singapore average. Tanglin is typically among the top three international schools in Singapore for IB results.
2022 A level results
The school’s A-level cohort achieved 100% pass rate. An exceptional 40% of all grades were an A*, compared to 14.6% in England. 69% of all grades were an A* or A, compared to 36.4% in England and 58% in independent schools in England.
Best ever (I)GCSE results
Students achieved Tanglin’s best ever set of IGCSE results this year, with 68% of Tanglin grades being A* and 85% were A* to A – that’s more than twice the percentage in England!
4. Paving the way to the UK
Tanglin’s students have the opportunity to sit for (I)GCSE exams from not just one, but multiple exam boards: Edexcel, Cambridge, AQA, and CCEA.
In addition, the school’s highly experienced university counselling team offers bespoke advice to students from Year 9 about subject choices and pathway for entry into UK university programmes. In Sixth Form, every student has one-to-one time with a counsellor to determine university choices. This effort is demonstrated in the students’ success; more than 99% of Tanglin’s graduates were admitted to the first or second choice university (primarily in the UK).
5. UK-bound Tanglin Alumni enjoy continued support after leaving Singapore
Tanglin takes great care of their UK-bound students, and they are not left to their own devices after leaving Singapore. Once back in the UK, Tanglin has a very robust programme to support and engage its UK alumni.
Each year, the Year 13 graduating cohort are presented with a ‘UK Survival Guide’ consisting of some friendly tips on living on their own;, easy cooking recipes, how to use the washing machine, budgeting, etc. (we might need a few copies of this ourselves!)
There is a strong Tanglin Alumni support network in the UK. Each year, Tanglin identifies the top 20 university destinations of the graduating cohort and connects leavers with a Tanglin alumni representative at each university. This helps leavers find mentors on their journeys as they further their education. A testament to the strength of this network is the annual alumni gathering in London, where more than 400 graduates of Tanglin attend, without fail, every year!
Congratulations, Tanglin Trust School!
