Non-stop rugby action, a carnival, special appearances by the Superdudes, My Little Pony and Transformers, plus Nerf immersive zones are some of the many exciting things you can expect at this super-duper family-friendly event.
If you’ve been looking to do something sporty together with the family, then pencil in the HSBC Singapore Rugby 7s into your calendar, stat! The Singapore Rugby 7s is back in town on the 28th and 29th of April at the Singapore National Stadium and is guaranteed to be bigger, better, bolder, with a fuller family entertainment programme than ever before.
Held over two fun-filled days, not only can you look forward to games that pack a punch, but there will also be live music, fun activities, international gourmet food and rugby-themed activities for the little ones in a carnival atmosphere. It will be nothing like you’ve ever seen before! Here’s a lowdown on what you and the brood can expect to do at the Singapore 7s:
Non-stop rugby action
Unlike a 15s rugby game (that lasts for 80 minutes), 7s rugby is super fast and furious! Like the name suggests, teams will consist of seven members playing seven minute halves. Each action-packed game is only 14 minutes long, making it ideal for young (and short!) attention spans. With just a few minutes in between each match, you and your family will definitely get your fill (and more!) of world-class rugby.
Meet some of the best players in the world
The 8th stop for the HSBC Sevens World Rugby series, Singapore will be hosting the top 16 teams in the world, who will compete for the championship. South Africa (last year’s series champions), Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia are just some of the exciting teams you’ll be able to watch. Also keep an eye out for legendary players, Ben Gollings and DJ Forbes (pictured below). These super-fit, talented and awe-inspiring icons will certainly get your rugrat’s seal of approval, thanks to their larger-than-life persona. Don’t forget to sneak in a pic or two with them!
Witness the stars of tomorrow play
Watch the most talented young, local rugby players from the under-14 age group battle it out for their own championship! These budding athletes will be taking part in ancillary competitions in the lead up to the Singapore 7s – the Regional Midnight Club 10s, which is a tournament for the best club players around the region, and the Titans Ruck & Rumble 10s, which is for the Under 10s. The final showdown will see the winners meet on the Saturday of the Singapore 7s, to battle for the championship. Hold on to your seats, this is going to be a good one!
Take the kids to the Fun Zone!
There’s more to the Singapore 7s than meets the eye. At the Transformer zone, help the Autobots beat the Decepticons by mastering your aim at a target practice booth. If shooting at Decepticons isn’t your thing, it’s not a total loss. There will also be lots of opportunities to snap a pic with the Transformers, plus a craft station and puzzles to keep little hands busy. My Little Pony fans can head to the immersive zone for a bit of sparkle and fantasy role play. Here, young fans will be taken to Equestria, the magical realm of the ponies where they’ll get the chance to meet Pinkie Pie, Applejack, and Rainbow Dash. Psst…We hear that Princess Twilight Sparkles will be there too. That’s not all! At the More Carnival Fun zone, little ones can enjoy activities such as, face painting and balloon sculpting. Junior will also be stoked to learn that the Superdudes will be down! Pencil Pirate, Flutterby, and Bubble Trouble will be making their way to the Singapore 7s, ready to the captivate their young audience with their signature hits, including crowd favourite “Super Thumbs Up” which will have your kiddos raising their thumbs in the air as they groove to the catchy tune. Tweens and teens aren’t left out either. At the interactive Nerf zone, you’ll enjoy leading your troop through an immersive Nerf battle game and just like rugby, it’s all about working as a team. There’s also a target practice zone to hone your shooting skills and a blaster testing facility as well. Whichever activity you choose, you’re definitely bound to have a blast!
Spot the crazy costumes
Any fan knows its tradition to show up in a fancy costume to the Rugby 7s. Nobody really knows why, but sevens-goers are often seen wearing the craziest costumes, and often do so as a group. Don’t worry if you aren’t the adventurous type. It will still be fun to play a game of ‘spot the quirky costume’, with your kiddos as they keep a look out for the odd superhero, circus or farm animal. When it comes to costumes at the Rugby 7s – the weirder, the better!
Enjoy a buzzing carnival – and great promotions – in the lead up to the games
Fans attending this year’s Rugby 7s can look forward to an exciting, six-week Singapore Rugby Carnival in the lead up to the two-day extravaganza in April. Get a taste for the sport and experience it first hand at weekend roadshows that will be popping up at various malls, including Velocity @ Novena Square, Kallang Wave Mall, United Square, plus the Singapore Zoo and Clarke Quay! Little ones (and big people) can take part in an array of fun activities and try different rugby games for free, plus stand a chance to meet rugby legends and celebrities. By the way, buy your tickets to the Singapore 7s early to enjoy a slew of promotional offers at eateries, retail outlets, entertainment hotspots and tourist attractions around the island, from now until 30 April 2018.
