The family movies happening between now and Xmas 2018

New blockbuster-movies-for-Xmas-2018-Nutcracker
We love bringing the kiddos to the cinema for an easy activity, and never more so when there are host of new blockbuster movies for Xmas 2018 happening!

Traditionally all the best blockbuster movies are released during summer and Xmas seasons. And as summer is definitely done in this part of the world, and Christmas is really not so far away at all, we’ve cobbled together a list of the must-see movies hitting the silver screen between now and the end of the year. School holidays are looming, people, and we still think a trip to the cinema is one of the easiest, most cost-effective activities for kiddos ever!

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

This one is already out and we can’t wait to catch the magical Disney version of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (pictured above). Starring Mackenize Foy as Clara (yep: she WAS Renesmee!) and the infinitely wonderful Morgan Freeman, as well as acting legends Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren and Misty Copeland, this tale of a mysterious parallel world is sure to thrill the whole family. Maybe even the grumpy teens (or maybe not).

The House With a Clock in its Walls

There’s way more going on than meets the eye in Lewis’ creepy new home. Photography: DreamWorks

Prepare for fantastical events happening in the most unexpected places in The House With a Clock on its Walls, which stars Jack Black and Cate Blanchett (two of our faves!). Follow 10-year-old Lewis when he goes to live in a creaky old house with a mysterious tick-tocking heart – along with the odd warlock and witch in this sometimes rather dark (it’s directed by Eli Roth: say no more) adventure movie for the fam.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

New adventures with Newt: hurrah! Photography: Warner Bros

Eddie Redmayne is back for another dose of Harry Potter-esque adventure off with Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and we can’t wait! The new movie gives us a glimpse not only of Newt Scamander as a wee boy, but also the chance to find out more about Albus Dumbledore (played by Jude Law) back when he had way less of a beard. Expect plenty of dastardly magic and fearless heroism as dark wizard, Gellert Grindelwald, escapes from MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America) and goes about trying to divide the wizarding world.

Pokemon: The Power of Us

The things we do for our kids. There’s a new Pokemon movie coming and we know we’ll be forced to see it. Photography: Oriental Light & Magic

Love ’em or hate ’em, the Pokemon franchise shows no signs of abating any time soon, and with this new movie hitting our screens imminently, the kids will be going Pokemon Go cray cray all over again. Sigh. It’s up to Ash and Pikachu to save the day after a series of threats endanger a festival and everyone in Fula City. If your kid is a fan, they’ll love this. You? Probably not so much.

The Grinch

Awww, how cute was Grinch before he hated Xmas? Photography: Universal Pictures

It’s been done before, but that doesn’t stop us feeling quite merry about the upcoming Universal Pictures’ version of The Grinch. Benedict Cumberbatch is voicing this lovable-despite-his-grumpy-demeanour character (we could make a teenager joke here but we’ll refrain) and we’re sure this age-old classic will be an Xmas blockbuster hit with the young and old alike.

Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse

So many Spideys! Photography: Colombia Pictures

Spidey gets an animated makeover in Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse as he crosses into parallel dimensions and teams up with a host of other Spider-Men (all from different realities) in a quest to stop the bad guy altering actual reality for the universe. It’s looking to be a pretty ambitious project animation-wise and we’re excited to see how this one is going to play out.

Aquaman. No caption necessary. Photography: Warner Bros

Hello, Aquaman! We’re sure this film will be a big hit what with its action-packed storyline that sees Arthur Curry learn that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Honestly? We’re just going along for the popcorn and, well, the gratuitous muscle shots of which we are sure there will be plenty.

Bumblebee gets a new friend to create havoc with. Photography: Hasbro

One for transformer fans: Bumblebee – surely everyone’s favourite autobot – is starring in his very own film just in time for Xmas. It’s the year 1987, and Bumblebee is hanging out in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town, where he meets teenager, Charlie, who decides to take him on as her own personal project.

Mary Poppins Returns

Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins? What do we think about that?

This may be the most supercalifragilisticexpialidocious movie event of the year: Mary Poppins Returns! The new movie has a lot to live up to for sure, so whether this version is going to stand the test of time like the original did remains to be seen. Mary – now played by Emily Blunt – returns to the Banks children (who are now all grown up) to help out in the magical way that Mary does. We’ll have to wait until after Xmas for this one, but it gives us something to look forward to once the turkey is all gone at least.
