When you’re a parent, all you want for your child is a smooth transition into school. The Rai family shares their story about how it works at GIIS...
Moving to a new school can be tough on any kid, especially one in a new country. There’s a lot to adjust to, which is why finding the right fit makes the transition a lot easier. For the Rai family, enrolling their son, Aaron, at GIIS SMART campus, Punggol was one of the best decisions they’ve made as parents. Here’s what they had to say…
What were the most important factors for you in choosing a school for Aaron?
When Aaron was in Kindergarten, he studied at GIIS East Coast campus. Subsequently, we moved to California on a work-related assignment. We came back to Singapore in 2019 and our natural choice was the IB Primary Years Programme at GIIS because of its inquiry-based approach and its similarity to what Aaron was accustomed to in the United States.
We were also happy to know that GIIS had advanced technology programmes and different modes of delivery (school closures last year, for example, saw no interruptions to learning because of the quick adoption of virtual lessons at GIIS within a day).
How’s it been so far?
We’re extremely satisfied. Aaron was comfortable from day one. His transition was smooth and he’s been actively participating in all events and activities organised by the school. We still recall that he was so delighted that we chose this school, and is driven to complete High School at GIIS.
During the circuit breaker, how GIIS quickly pivoted was really admirable. The online interaction and video sessions were seamless. We also appreciate the tailored attention that is given to each student in the PYP based on their individual capabilities.
What does Aaron love most about attending GIIS?
Since Aaron’s an outgoing and active child, he loves that GIIS provides plenty of activities, group projects and several avenues for children to exhibit their learnings and skills. As his parents, we can honestly say that his participation in these activities has boosted his confidence.
What’s your take on the school’s curriculum?
GIIS offers the international IB PYP and the Indian CBSE curriculum at primary school level. At secondary level, they offer the Cambridge curriculum culminating with the IGCSE at Grade 10 and the IBDP at Grade 12. The CBSE is also offered for secondary students.
As far as the IB PYP is concerned, we love the fact that the curriculum encourages children to explore things on their own and teachers act as facilitators, guiding students with their discovery process. The IB PYP teachers at GIIS have an excellent grasp of the PYP curriculum and are passionate about what they do, which reflects in the day-to-day activities of students.
