We’re not gonna lie: Page One, our all time fave bookstore, left a literal literary hole following its closure back in 2012. So imagine our excitement when we found out its space in VivoCity has now – finally – been filled by a brand new library. Woohoo! Opening this Saturday, 12 January, on level 3 of VivoCity, we’ve been taking a look at what library@harbourfront has got to offer in this week’s Find of the Week.
Spanning a whopping 3000 sqm with around 200,000 books, magazines, and audio-visual materials filling the shelves, library@harbourfront is the largest library to open in a shopping mall here in sunny Singapore. Relocated from Bukit Merah Central, library@harbourfront is designed with distinct zones – an Adults’ and Teens’ Zone and also a dedicated Children’s Zone. That’ll keep the sibling squabbles to a minimum: send them off to their appropriate zones for some peace and quiet, we say.
What’s in the Children’s Zone?
While the teens kick back in the deck chairs of the reading lounge, you’ll get to snuggle up with smaller kiddos in one of the reading spaces in the blue and green coastal themed Children’s Zone. Get busy with digital books and activities in the Tumblebook stations, or dive into the world of fiction over in the immersive Stories Come Alive Room. You can even pop open an Augmented Reality book with topics including space, animals and health. One feature we’re particularly excited about is the Tinker Truck: the first ever children’s makerspace in a library for small people age three to nine years. Kids can get hands on with DIY crafts, puzzles and technology in this cool-as-ice space.
What can we expect?
Expect tech-assisted learning through weekly Virtual Reality sessions, a video wall and also lots of themed programmes which will be happening throughout the year for adults, teens and kids of all ages. Upcoming programmes include robotics and programming, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, and IoT (the Internet of Things). From storytelling sessions for the tiniest tots to tinkering opps aplenty for tweens and teens, there really is something for everyone.
All this and there’s more: it also has panoramic views over to one of our favourite weekend haunts – Sentosa! Reading with a view is our favourite kinda reading! And once you’re done with the books and activities, if the weather is good why not take our Sentosa guide and yourselves over the water to continue the family fun? So much yes.
