In the world of parenting nothing gets us more brownie points than throwing the best birthday party in the world for our kiddos. Whether that is a simple jelly and ice cream affair, or an all-singing, all-dancing showstopper, a good birthday bash has the potential for miles of smiles from the kids and the grown ups alike. But to keep coming up with fresh ideas that don’t leave a huge dent in your wallet, and, God forbid, don’t repeat what another child in the class/condo/world has already done, can be a tough call. Parents of Singapore: we’ve been catching up with Jess Johnson, owner and creator of teepee sleepover party sensation, Petites Soirees, your new party best friend and our Find of the Week…
Hi Jess! Tell us a little bit about yourself and how Petites Soirees came to be…
Well, I am Jess and I’m originally from Melbourne, Australia. I am mum to Oscar (8) and Matilda (5). We moved to Singapore in January 2017 for my husband, Rhett’s, work. I love the balance of working and being a mum, so I decided to launch Petites Soirees after becoming increasingly frustrated, driving island wide (sometimes for weeks on end) trying to piece together and style themed parties for my own two children. I wanted to create something that was memorable, affordable and simple to host without the hassle and frustration I had been experiencing.
I initially thought it would take me around three months to pull it all together and launch Petites Soirees, but it was six months before I set up my first soiree. The delay was due to the challenges of creating a company here as an expat, and because of this it was a bigger financial investment than I realised it was going to be. It was definitely a gamble both personally and financially for me: I was just keeping my fingers crossed that people would love the idea as I much as I did!
What is Petites Soirees?
Petites Soirees is a slumber event hire and styling company: we come to your home and create the perfect kids indoor glamping experience! We have designed some gorgeous themes for both boys and girls of all ages, and once you have chosen the theme, we take care of the rest, including set up, styling and the pack up. The party package includes:
- Five teepee style tents
- Foam mattresses with protector and cotton sheet
- Cotton, patterned doona (duvet) with cover
- Breakfast tray with lantern or light
- Fairy lights
- Themed garland
- Gift for party host
We know how much kids love the excitement of a sleepover, and our setup helps to make it all the more special.
Tell us more about the creation and set up of Petites Soirees
I had a very definite vision in mind for how I wanted the teepees and set up to look, so I started work with a local carpenter to create the frames, which took a couple of months. He worked from my sketches so it was a bit of trial and error for us to get the dimensions exactly right. I then sourced the fabrics, all centered around a different theme, which a lovely lady in Chinatown went about sewing for me. To complete the styling for each theme – Sweet Dream Nights, Boho Nights, Tribal Nights and Into the Wild Nights – I ended up sourcing everything I needed from Singapore, Australia and other parts of Asia. It was quite the task!
What other things can we expect from Petites Soirees?
I have also launched Petites Additions: a choice of party favours including dream catchers and bags, which is proving very popular and is something I want to focus more on during 2019. One thing I really miss about living in Melbourne is browsing endless boutique stores for cute and snazzy bits and bobs for parties, so my plan is to bring some of those great brands here to Singapore. I just launched a gorgeous nail polish brand, Miss Frankie, on the site this week: it’s free from nasties and is a great activity idea for girly sleepovers.
Petites Soirees has only been up and running for about five months, but the response has been phenomenal. I never imagined so early on in the game I would have wait lists and so many enquiries! I feel incredibly happy and lucky (and also very relieved!).
