If you're looking for a school that goes above and beyond your expectations, look no further than CIS. We spoke to Charles Schiavinoto about why his family's a fan of the school.
Finding a school that goes above and beyond — in terms of academics and community — is never easy. But luckily for the Schiavinoto family, they’ve found it in CIS. Their twins, Davi and Lucas, have been in the school for five years now and the family has felt nothing but satisfied with their choice. After visiting four other international schools in Singapore, it was CIS that stood out for them. We had a chat with Charles Schiavinoto on his family’s decision process and why they continue to be impressed by CIS…
Hi Charles, what was it about CIS that made you pick this school for your kids?
We appreciated CIS’s transparency in the application process and empathy from all the staff. Since the children’s first day, we have felt welcomed into the school’s big family. They have created a trusted and helpful relationship from day one. Meeting the Primary School Vice Principal also helped. She showed a real interest in our concerns and challenges and offered lots of practical advice and support. When the boys started school, their teachers showed support and enthusiasm; they made a real effort to get to know them and make sure they understood their new routine.
How has CIS lived up to your expectations?
They are in regular contact with us about our children’s progress and give us lots of opportunities to visit their classrooms and talk freely with their teachers. CIS is a great school because of their people. Their teachers are fantastic. They are super experienced and love what they do. They are always available to meet with you and seek solutions that benefit the school, student and family.
And what do the kids love about CIS?
They like the school’s library, sports facilities and variety of arts options, but the strong bond and relationship they have with their teachers is what they love most. The teachers have kept them interested in learning, curious and motivated to change the world!
What do you like most about CIS’s curriculum?
CIS’ curriculum is delivered within the IB PYP framework. It actively encourages Lucas and Davi to take ownership of their learning process by setting personal goals and practicing on-going self evaluation. The teaching approach is inquiry-based which allows the kids to discover their interests and strengths.
In fact, I recommend other parents to choose an IB school. This curriculum allows students to gain a shared awareness of what it means to be internationally-minded, to value and cultivate human ingenuity, to hone and make use of transdisciplinary skills, and to approach learning with attitudes that yield optimum results. Also, most international schools are IB schools which makes it easier for children to adapt to their new school if the family relocates. Making sure the school’s environment, facilities and rapport with teachers matches your needs and priorities, is also important.
What does CIS do in terms of building a community for parents?
There are multiple ways parents can be part of the school community. This includes helping out in the classroom, as chaperones on field trips, as a room parent, or as a member of the Parent Teacher Association. The school also organises parent workshops and coffee mornings covering a range of topics including parenting strategies, curriculum and educational support.
Thank you, Charles!
