Theatre trip with the kids
FOMO. It might be a newish acronym but the fear of missing out is as old as this Norwegian tale that investigates whether the grass really is greener on the other side. So too is that moment when every child, at one time or another, stamps their feet and insists that the bike/doll/video game that their friend has got is better and they want what they’re having.
Sometimes there’s nothing to do but laugh at ourselves… to illustrate the point, The Little Company pokes fun at all of us in their hilarious re-telling of The Three Bill Goats Gruff, now showing at DBS Arts Centre – Home of SRT. And we couldn’t help but laugh along entirely with our little people.
In this version, Baby, Middle and Big Goat are chaperoned by a flighty Bo Frilly who is so prone to day-dreaming that she keeps misplacing her goats, much like her sheep chaperone counterpart, Bo Peep. Of course, fearing a food shortage, they head for greener pastures only to be confronted by a tricky troll. Even when they outsmart the hunchback, 3-horned creature living beneath the bridge, they soon discover that the joke is on them when the green grass of their future home is nothing more than a façade to lure them.
We all know this timeless tale of the value in realizing how good you’ve got it, coupled with how brains can overcome brawn. But what makes this production so good for kids is the amazing staging, featuring music and lyrics by the Laurence Olivier award-winning West-End musical theatre songwriting duo George Stiles and Anthony Drewe (Honk! and Mary Poppins). Through amusing songs and dancing, kids get the message in full-blown technicolour.
We have to say though, that our favourite character was none other than the villain – Troll is played expertly and impressively by Benjamin Chow who you may recognize as Santa Claus from Junior Claus. His clever British accent, sinister yet funny delivery and creepy movements get the point across to kids without scaring them.
Don’t miss this brilliant bit of kids theatre on now!
