CIS’ experiential learning approach and innovative programmes are just some of the reasons why it's been awarded the gold winner in the “Most Future Ready Students” category. Read on to find out more...
Parents, can we all agree that prepping our kids for the real world is one of our top priorities? So, how does one kickstart their path to future success? According to Canadian International School (CIS), having an innovative programming that features an inquiry-based and experiential learning approach can unlock your child’s potential.
The team at CIS are pros at this. In fact, they recently won the gold award for “Most Future-Ready Students” at our Singapore Education Awards 2021.
“At CIS, we focus on developing the skillset students will need for success, both now and in the future. We benchmark our curriculum to ensure that it meets or exceeds other national curricular standards around the world. Our teachers encourage intellectual curiosity, creative problem solving and critical thinking – our concept based approach ensures students are actively applying what they’ve learnt to a range of rigorous and unique real-world learning experiences,” says Christa Craats, experiential learning coordinator at CIS.
Developing critical thinking and creative problem solving skills
The CIS team incorporate research and excellence into teaching practices to get the best results, and adopt the most proven curricula, teaching methods and school design in order to drive student learning and outcomes. Studies have shown that experiential learning not only widens a child’s knowledge of the world, it also teaches them to apply their understanding of concepts to real-world situations. It’s no wonder it is a cornerstone of a CIS education.
Aside from introducing your child to the wonders of the world, the experiential learning approach also gives them the opportunity to understand tricky real-world concepts and situations through a hands- and minds-on approach. This challenges them to think outside the box when dealing with real-life problems in the future.
Experiential learning is hands and minds on
Fun fact: CIS was the first school to offer the Open Minds and STEAM programmes, which aim to develop students who are ready to succeed in a rapidly changing world. During the Open Minds Programme, primary school students can apply what they’ve learnt in the classroom to “real world” settings like Sungei Buloh, Asian Civilisations Museum and Chinatown. They’ll engage in authentic environmental investigations or discussions with field experts that will put their critical thinking, research, observation and questioning skills to the test.
STEAM, on the other hand, is an interdisciplinary approach that integrates areas of science, technology, environmental studies, arts and maths. The programme teaches students conceptual understandings of each discipline, how to analyse problems by utilising the design cycle and then develop prototype solutions, before testing their concepts in a real-world context.
