We have a serious case of kindergarten envy: Canadian International School’s amazing new Outdoor Discovery Centre has launched at its Tanjong Katong campus! This outdoor learning space has been specially created for its East Coast students to enjoy .
Designed to facilitate play-based learning for their kindergarten students aged three to six years*, the Outdoor Discovery Centre gives us another reason to love this cosy campus. (And woohoo, its lease has just been extended!) To celebrate the opening of the Outdoor Discovery Centre, CIS is inviting you and your little explorers to what is going to be a fun-filled Very Hungry Caterpillar themed garden party on Friday 24 February! Read on for more on what’s on offer…
Hooray for play!
Let’s get out of the air-conditioned classrooms and learn the fun way, we say. The Outdoor Discovery Centre is one impressive way to give children an opportunity to interact with all the sights, sounds and textures of the outdoors. They can run over grassy hills, experiment with speed and sound, build or practise their balance, or just enjoy some quiet time. Angela Henderson, Principal of the CIS Tanjong Katong campus explains that the space works like an “extension of the classroom, enriching the learning experience for Kindergarten students.”
The classroom doors open straight into the garden, so math lessons can happen in the sand pit, while colours can be learnt on the art wall. The edible herb garden encourages kids to understand where food comes from and care for their environment, while the natural pond and soothing waterfall are a great spot for some relaxation, or learning about water ecosystems. Say hi to the resident turtles!
Check out the sound garden with its colourful buckets and chimes for kids to make some noise. The garden’s bicycle track and grassy hills are safe environments for children to develop gross motor skills, and wild imaginations can grow when there’s a tunnel and ‘lookout’ for fun games of hide-and-seek or pirate adventures. This is a place where kids can really explore their senses: the sand pit is a big favourite, but only second to the mud kitchen where kids can squelch and splash while learning concepts of volume and mass.
Come to the party!
It’s going to be a fun-filled morning with storytelling sessions in English and Chinese, obstacles to conquer, an art and craft corner and a chance to take home your very own hand-potted plant! Sit back and enjoy the party mood with light refreshments while the kids run around. The school’s Kindergarten Leadership team will also be on hand to answer your queries, or take you on tours of the campus. RSVP now to join the fun!
