The votes have been cast, and the parents have spoken - Evon Tan from Brighton Montessori wins Teacher of the Year (Kindergarten) 2022!
Besides international schools, the Singapore Education Awards also recognises the achievements and contributions of teachers as well. After all, teachers are the backbone of the school they teach in. The children look up to them as role models too. As such, the Teacher of the Year category is created to recognise teachers who are out to make a difference in the children’s lives.
As parents and children know their teachers best, the winners of this category are determined by popular vote. Evon Tan from Brighton Montessori at HarbourFront Centre is the clear winner for this year’s kindergarten section. Let’s find out why she’s so popular with children and their parents.
Why Evon Tan won Teacher of the Year
Parents love Evon for her big heart and positive mindset. She is a caring, warm, and approachable teacher to the children; as well as a reliable and conscientious educator in their parents’ eyes. Evon crafts her lessons to not only be educational, but also engaging enough to liven the classroom atmosphere and cultivate a love for learning among children.
Besides that, Evon puts in the effort to build strong relationships with the children under her care as well as their parents. This strong parent-school partnership is also one of the things that sets Brighton Montessori apart. “I believe that a close-knit collaboration between teachers and parents is essential for the holistic growth of children. Hence, I always find time to listen to the parents and to assist them wherever possible for the betterment of their children,” she said.
Evon also shared an example of how prioritising parent communication has made a positive change on one of the children’s lives. “There was a little girl in my class back in 2019 who was afraid of new people and new things in her surroundings. This includes magicians at birthday parties as well as mascots at theatre shows. Her mother and I worked closely together to create opportunities within and beyond school for the little girl to learn how to adapt to new situations slowly and safely. I received a happy email from her mother to thank me and inform me of her daughters’ progress. Not only was she able to interact with people independently, but she was also even selected to present the valedictorian speech during her graduation from Brighton Montessori! I was especially touched!”
Her positive mindset and dedication to learning has won her numerous awards
Evon has won three awards throughout her five years at Brighton Montessori. She won the Promising Star Award as a new employee in the preschool. Following that, she has also won Service Excellence and Solitaire Awards for high quality customer service and outstanding performance.
To support Environmental Sustainability Development, she introduced the concepts of Earth Day and recycling to children. She brought the younger classes out to read under the sunlight as a simple act of conserving energy. For the older children, she set up recycling bins in the classroom to teach them how to recycle.
“At a very young age, I was certain that I wanted to work with young children as a career. I started with a Diploma in Early Childhood Education ten years ago, and now I’m a Senior Teacher at Brighton Montessori. My love for working with children remains steadfast – nothing gives me more joy than seeing them grow and blossom under my care and guidance. I see teaching as my calling, and it is my blessing to be able to devote myself to the teaching profession, especially in nurturing and guiding young children,” Evon said.
