Ask any parent and they’ll tell you that a good stroller is worth the splurge… here’s why.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a brand new parent or getting ready to welcome a new bub — buying a great stroller trumps all purchases you’ll ever make. But here’s the thing: stroller shopping can be incredibly overwhelming. There are so many different kinds of strollers out there, which makes it tough to decide on THE stroller. Our tip? Try to look for a stroller that meets your travelling needs, is safe, and is super comfy for your baby. Dr Yang Linqi from Thomson Medical Centre and Sharon Wong, CEO and Founder of Motherswork, two mothers who are also experts in their fields, share how you can tell if your stroller ticks all these boxes:
It needs to be snug and comfy
The biggest telltale sign bub loves a stroller? When they’re sleeping soundly in it! Look for a stroller that’s made with super soft fabrics so your baby will feel just as snug and comfy as if they’re still in your womb. “ A womb-like structure also provides a comforting space and prevents stress while traveling,” shares Sharon. Another important feature? Good back support. Newborns’ spines aren’t as strong as older babies, which means they need lots of support.
It has great suspension
You might not realise it, but good suspension could make all the difference. It’ll let your baby nap peacefully, without getting startled by bumps along the way. Getting up and down curbs shouldn’t be a problem with a good stroller. Another good reason to splurge on a stroller with good shock absorption? It’ll make any ride smooth, ensuring your baby is safe at all times.
It’s safe
When you’re pushing around precious cargo, safety is always a priority. “Falling is a common injury for babies,” says Dr Yang. “Which means they need to be in a safe place at all times.” Find a stroller with side pillows that cushion the baby’s head, and keep them safe from head injuries. You’re going to want a stroller with a five-point harness so it can withstand pulling forces from different directions AND protect your baby at the same time. A wrist strap is also a plus, handy for keeping the stroller — and bub— close to you.
It grows with your baby
A sign of a good stroller is one that you can use throughout the years. “An option of having a bassinet for your newborn so your baby can lie flat when you’re out and about all day is key,” says Sharon. When they’re older enough to sit up, the stroller’s seat should be adjustable to give your curious bub a good view of the world around them.
It should be easy to maneuver and bring around on your daily adventures
Whether you’re heading to a busy mall with crowded aisles or ready to go off-road, you’ll need a stroller that’ll let you do all of the above. You’ll want a powerful push with easy turning, making walks an effortless experience at all times.
It should provide ample protection from the sun
Living in sunny Singapore, you’ll also want a stroller with a canopy that’ll completely shield them from the harmful rays of the sun. Choose a stroller with a high sun protection index to protect your bub’s delicate skin. This way, you can be sure the baby’s safe from the sun exposure even while they’re napping soundly in their stroller!
There’s no doubt that a stroller is one of the best investments you’ll ever make as a new mum. It’s an amazing invention that will let you have your precious baby with you at all times, even while you’re running errands or having a quick coffee with friends. The tips above should help you make that all-important decision of which stroller to buy! Good luck!
