Enriching your child’s education
Ever heard of a school that actually has independent artists with artists’studios on the school premises? No? We thought so!
The Blue House Nursery & International School proudly houses 6 Artists-in-Residence within the Blue House Village, each from a different nationality and a unique artistic style. Each artist works one-on-one with Blue House children aged 18 months to 6 years as part of the Blue House Community.
Art is very much at the heart of the Reggio Emilia philosophy. As inspiration, creation, expression, and freedom, Blue House incorporates art in their children’s discovery processes by using real life and often recycled materials that evoke a natural interest in children. Whether it’s clay, metal and wire, recycled materials, or simply paint, art allows children to express themselves with however they are feeling.
One artist-in-residence, Susanne Pauli, recently set up an activity for the children (aged 18 months to 3 years). Susanne transformed the school courtyard to an outdoor art studio using banana leaves and other natural products from the gardens surrounding Blue House. She also layed out a variety of interesting tools for the children to let them paint, sculpt, and draw to their own free will.
Focusing on the process of their creation and not the end product, the children had an incredible morning, which was further explored in the classrooms for weeks after. They even visited the artist’s studio onsite!
These real-life and purposeful interactions are essential in challenging our children’s learning and help to create a sense of community integral in the Reggio Emilia framework.
