HoneyKids Asia and Hello Sister Strategy present: The Helper, a documentary that tells the real stories of foreign domestic workers. Tissues are strongly recommended.
Foreign domestic workers take on the mammoth task of managing households and looking after the families of Singapore day after day. They keep our kids safe, nurtured, and smiling, and most importantly, they make them feel loved when mum and dad can’t be there & in most cases, they do all this with a smile while longing for the families they’ve left behind at home.
In short, we’ll never fully comprehend the sacrifices they’ve made to be here, but we are eternally grateful.
The helper is a feature-length documentary chronicling diverse stories from Hong Kong’s migrant domestic worker population. Choosing to leave their homeland and separated from their families, the stories show the immense contribution they make to the Hong Kong society and uncover the inspiring combination of grit, pride and determination that drives them.
We’ve joined forces with Hello Sister Strategy to present the Singapore launch of ‘The Helper’, partly to say a big fat ‘THANK YOU’ (although it will never be big enough) to these extraordinary ladies, and partly to shine a light on the stories behind the smiles. While this documentary tells the tales of helpers in Hong Kong, the themes of immense sacrifice, hard work, and endless amounts of love are the same here in Singapore.
We’d like to invite everyone in Singapore – with or without helpers – and most importantly, helpers themselves, to the screening at The Projector (why not shout your helper some tickets to enjoy it with her friends?). Make sure you arrive at 5pm to enjoy a free glass of Mumm Champagne (thank you Pernod Ricard!) and fruit and perhaps hear a few local stories before the movie starts rolling at 6pm.
All proceeds from this event will be donated to HOME (Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics), to help them continue the great work they do to support helpers in Singapore.
