Best places for Yu Sheng
Yu Sheng tossing (a.k.a. lo hei) is probably the most fun thing about the Chinese New Year celebrations (next to receiving ang baos and pigging out on bak kwa, of course), and it’s one of the most important traditions observed during the Lunar New Year. If you don’t want to make a mess at home, here are the best options for doing this out and about with the family…
Jade
The Eight Happiness Gold Rush Yu Sheng ($68 per person for five pax and below) at Jade is almost too gorgeous to eat. Key ingredients include Champagne jelly (check out the fancy gold leaves encased within them!), salmon, olive oil, and peach dressing.
Jade, Ground Floor, The Fullerton Hotel, 1 Fullerton Square, Singapore 049178, p. 6877 8188.
Cocotte
Cocotte puts a refreshing French twist to the traditional Chinese creation. Instead of salmon, they’ve added smoked duck ($49 per serving) to the colourful mish-mash of items found in yusheng. Not a fan of duck? A poached lobster option (mmm…) is also available ($102 per serving).
Cocotte, 2 Dickson Road, Singapore 209494, p. 6298 1188.
Tomo Izakaya
It’s not just Yu Sheng, it’s a Yu Sheng tower. This special creation ($66 for three to four pax) at Japanese restaurant Tomo Izakaya comes with amaebi, tobiko, kanpachi and salmon. Other additions like rice crisps are also included in the mix. If you like, opt for premium add-ons, like Hokkaido hotate and ikura.
Tomo Izakaya, #01-04 Clarke Quay, 3A River Valley Road, Singapore 179020, p. 6333 0100.
Queen Yu Sheng at Antoinette
Antoinette
Fancy a dessert-centric yusheng? Get your hands on one at Antoinette ($88 for six to eight pax). A pretty golden egg contains all sorts of treats to satisfy that sweet tooth of yours, from chocolate fish and sweet potato chips to mandarin orange butter cake and meringue kisses.
Antoinette, 30 Penhas Road, Singapore 208188, p. 6293 3121.
Oceans of Seafood
Seafood lovers, you’re in for a real treat. Oceans of Seafood’s Vibrancy of Life Yu Sheng ($128 per seving) features glorious ingredients flown in from the world-famous Tsukiji Fish Market, including items like rock lobster, Amberjack sashimi and salmon sashimi. All this topped with creamy, homemade sesame sauce makes for a perfect CNY centrepiece. Psst, sake lovers… the Yu Sheng set comes with a bottle of sake as well.

If you’re anything like us, you can’t get enough of truffle, and the Yu Sheng at Sofitel So’s Xperience Restaurant has it drizzled all over. Go for the So Classic Truffle Yusheng ($58 per serving, good for four pax) for a medley of fresh salmon, smoked salmon, and salmon roe, or the So Deluxe Truffle Yu Sheng ($88 per serving, good for four pax) for the luxurious addition of lobster and scallops.

NUVO
NUVO’s come up with a new way to enjoy yusheng: on a pizza ($28 per serving). Aside from the usual ingredients, you’ll be given to option of Norwegian salmon or braised Tsukiji octopus to toss the yusheng before diving the thin-crust wonder for all to enjoy.
