We step our living room dance sessions up a notch with a look at the classes offered by Tanglin Arts Studio (psst: there’s a free trial class!)
Got an aspiring Beyonce or Bruno Mars in your household? Or perhaps The Jackson 5: Parents & Kids Edition? Even if your dancing dreams aren’t quite so lofty and you’d just like your kids to have fun while learning some new tricks, Tanglin Arts Studio has a class that will suit. Parents included!
We all have to admit to long-forgotten dreams of toe-tapping stardom, fuelled by hours of living room dancing and hairbrush warbling (which may or may not still come to life on the odd occasion). So when our kids start begging to go to dance classes, it’s hard to say no. Tanglin Arts Studio gets it, and they try to do more than just offer dance classes. They want their students to have a great time, make new friends, and even get the opportunity to travel to international competitions now and then!
Classes at Tanglin Arts Studio (TAS) start from as young as two-and-a-half (blowing the cute meter off the charts) and are available to girls, boys, and adults. All levels of ability are welcome – this is not the place for intimidating auditions, excruciating rehearsals, and cranky tight-bunned instructors. The range of classes on offer is huge, and includes Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Acrobatics, and Boys’ Street Theatre. The class that’s got us reviving our singing talents (and by ‘talents’ we mean ‘Friday night karaoke-level carnage’) is the Musical Theatre class, otherwise known as Glee Club. Now one of the school’s most popular classes, this is a super fun and creative environment in which students will develop skills in acting, singing and dancing. The repertoire of performances comes from Broadway and The West End, and the aim is to “bring out everyone’s individual sparkle and confidence.” Sign us up!
TAS follows the Australian Teachers of Dancing (ATOD) syllabus, which is not widely available in Singapore, and gives all the students the chance to sit the ATOD exams every year. Last year, the school performed for the first time at the ‘Get the Beat’ competition in Australia, and they went on tour down under again this year. Lucky ducks!
If you’d like to explore some Tap or Zumba for adults, or get your little ones to release their inner ballerina or acrobat, now’s the perfect time, as TAS is offering all HoneyKids readers a free trial, and a waiver of the registration fee if you decide to sign up. They also do birthday parties! We’re wondering if they’ll extend the hospitality to a 40th or two…
