This fresh-faced craze
Our Facebook feed has been jammed with raw beauties for days now. The no-make up selfie can’t be ignored. But we appreciate it all the more now that it has a cause, other than to prove that celebrities still look amazing when bare-skinned.
Now the no-makeup selfie is not about vanity, it is about harnessing the power of social media and raising awareness as well as cash for cancer. Here’s all you need to know about fresh-facing the craze.
Who started it
Fiona Cunningham, an 18 year old mum from Stoke-On-Trent in the UK started the mini revolution after she set up the No Make Up Selfie For Cancer Awareness Facebook Page. Having lost family to cancer, witnessing the rise of the selfie phenonemon, and seeing nothing on Facebook or Twitter that made use of the trend, she saw an opportunity.
How to take it
Taking a selfie is easy. Taking a good selfie requires a little staging. After trawling the internet we’ve noticed that an awful lot of these pic’s are taken laying down. And no wonder! Let gravity do the work for you, lie back and let those wrinkles fall away.
When to take it
Any time of day is the right time to be charitable but there appears to be a certain amount of kudos that comes with an early morning selfie. The bravery in not only showing your bare face to the world but of doing it upon waking, does not seem to go unnoticed (anyway, that’s when your pillow is handy for achieving that smooth appearance). Those fighting cancer are brave every minute of every day so why shouldn’t we be!
Ways to fake it
If you really want to, you can of course tweak your pic. Smart phones are packed with loads of tricks and filter-use is de rigeur these days. Alternatively, a few women are choosing to don the make-up anyway and take a photo with a receipt for their donation instead. We reckon it doesn’t matter how you do it, it’s the giving that counts.
Those that play it
A host of celebrities have got in on the act. We don’t need to drop names. We’ve even come across some guys urging potential selfie-takers to include their rack when taking a pic – it’s for breast cancer after all and showing your chest is relevant!
How to give it
If you’re in the UK you can get instructions on how to donate from some of the selfies themselves. Ladies holding up placards give you the information you need. However, for those of us outside of the UK you can donate to local Cancer Councils who themselves are jumping on the movement and using social media channels to provide local pledging details.
Who gets it
As a consequence of Miss Cunningham’s ingenuity, Cancer Research UK set up the campaign at their end in order to receive the donations that the no make-up selfies spruiked. According to The Guardian, 8 million pounds have already been raised. Stories of money being directed to the wrong charity are currently being amicably rectified.
