Face to face with sharks this August
Jaws gave these guys a bad name. Sharks are often more scared of us than we are of them. Not convinced? Well on the back of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, the Resorts World Sentosa S.E.A. Aquarium is inviting us all to meet these majestic creatures of the ocean and get to know them better. SEAA Wonders is a month-long programme that aims to raise awareness and educate the public about marine life and delicate ocean ecosystems. Different water-dwelling animals will be featured each month, but for the whole month of August, it’s all about sharks.
One of the biggest highlights of SEAA Wonders’ first edition so far has been a special demonstration by Cristina Zenato, a renowned shark conservationist. In an amazing presentation, Cristina “hypnotises” sharks by rubbing specific places around their heads, which renders them immobile and almost asleep! This incredible gift has allowed Cristina’s to study the apex predators up close and contribute a great deal to marine research and the conservation of these hunted animals.
If you missed seeing this really cool demo in person, check out the video here. But don’t wait too long to get on down to SEA Aquarium and participate in lots of activities before the end of August. One pretty spectacular new programme is the Shark Dive (daily, 3pm, $198), where you get to swim freely with sharks under the watchful eye of a professional; there is a fun Shark Adventure trail, where kids will receive a special activity sheet and stand to win a prize if they complete the sheet after visiting six stations across the aquarium; mesmerising shark feeding sessions and storytelling sessions on certain days (check the website for a full schedule).
