Ditch the usual summer holidays mayhem, we’ve got plenty of activities lined up for kids of all ages!
Plenty for the theatre-goers this May! First up, the highly anticipated ACE! Festival 2013. Ever read the story of The Enormous Turnip or The Magic Porridge Pot? See these stories come to life as your little ones enter the world of magic, dreams, and fairytales. Designed for children aged 3-14, these shows at ACE! Festival 2013 are a top-notch total arts experience using local and international performers.
For the older kids, catch The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik, a highly-engaging masterpiece that chronicles the inspirational journey of character Alvin, a solitary explorer who tries to reunite with the soul of his dearly departed wife while trying to save the world. This endearing show will enthrall with its heartfelt storyline and amaze the tech-savvy young audience with its ingenious fusion of black light theatre, mime, puppetry, music, and animation.
There’s also Flipside Festival 2013, which explores the lighter (and more humorous) side of the arts. Great for older kids and adults alike.
Littlies ages 3 and above will enjoy Tiddler & Other Terrific Tales, adapted from the bestselling books by Children’s Laureate, Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler (creators of The Gruffalo), and brought o life by the award-winning Scamp Theatre (UK).
Have a curious botanist? Take them out to explore the Supermarket Garden in the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden. They’ll learn fascinating facts and hear interesting stories about the banana, peanut, soya bean, sugarcane, sweet potato, and more.
Hone those pastry skills! db Bistro Moderne will be launching its inaugural Junior Pastry Academy with a series of workshops held across five Saturdays in June. Each 90-minute class will teach kids aged 5-12 how to master cookies, brownies, yogurt cake, candy bars, and cupcakes. The $75 price tag also includes sweet treats and bubbles for adults. For the adventurous time-travellers, troop to Sentosa’s Images of Singapore. They can play little detectives as they help to find Dr H who has disappeared into the past. They’ll also get to sneak-a peek into Singapore’s past through time portals and keep proof of their time-travelling journey with augmented reality-enabled photos of themselves during the defining moments of Singapore’s history.
Like art? Make sure to head to the Singapore Art Museum for this year’s Art Garden 2013, the ever-popular exhibition of contemporary art for the young (and young-at-heart).
Don’t forget it’s Mother’s Day! Enjoy a family-friendly flea market at the quaint Fire Station along Upp Bukit Timah Road.
