Personalised Learning at Nexus
You can send your kids to the best school in the world but it doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be a great learner. A bit worrying when you consider how much a first-class education can cost. Finances aside, when you consider the uncertainty of future prospects for your child, discovering a successful way to support their learning becomes an imperative.
So, after hearing about the implementation of ‘personalised learning’ at NEXUS International School, we were understandably intrigued. Here, they share with us what it’s all about and how its been the most successful teaching tool they’ve ever implemented. You can also find out more by visiting the school: Nexus has an open-door policy so you’re always welcome to see it in action!
All students learn differently
It’s as simple as that. For years, educators have undertaken research that proves that, even when students are grouped according to standardised tests, they know different amounts about different subjects, and respond differently to teaching with varying results.
Change starts with you
Personalising a curriculum in the classroom is tricky. Teaching the same syllabus in multiple ways to suit different learning capacities is just not possible. Some tailoring can take place, for sure, but at the end of the day, all students need to receive the same information in order to meet requirements of the education system applicable to each year level. So the onus is on the student to make their learning work for them.
Measuring your own success
By learning to ‘self-regulate’, students can not only improve their own learning, but control it. This empowering concept is based around the idea of students recognising their belief in themselves, how they undertake, and their response to feedback. By being conscious of each step in this 3-part process to learning, they can then start to adjust and modify their thinking and behaviour to positively influence their outcomes.
Teaching skills for self-regulation
This doesn’t mean that students are left to their own devices. At NEXUS International School, teaching students how to learn is as important as teaching them what to learn. Educators here take the lofty ideal of self-regulation and convey it into concrete skills, like these:
- Strategic action: learning how to set goals, to plan, to monitor and to evaluate progress against a standard, rather than against other people.
- Motivation to learn: learning that actions lead to an outcome and that choosing certain actions can lead to results.
- Taking responsibility: learning that success is not the result of things outside of their control
- Making an effort: learning that effort rather than ‘intelligence’ is critical in developing resilient and self regulating learners,
The heart of the matter
Personalised learning is at the heart of what Nexus International School is all about. Through much research and consideration, the school has brought this concept in to form the cornerstone of their teaching philosophy. The Nexus curriculum has been thoroughly reviewed and modernized to reflect this belief. This approach is not without challenges for both students and teachers, but it has started to deliver a great degree of satisfaction for all as well as leading to great achievements. Something to be very proud of!
