Remedies for eczema in babies are a dime a dozen, so how do you find a product that does the trick while being gentle on your baby’s skin? We get the lowdown on Aveeno’s new Baby Dermexa range and how it stacks up...
Parents who have babies struggling with eczema – we feel you! It’s not easy watching your bundle of joy’s discomfort thanks to those horrible red skin patches (not to mention all the snuggles you’re missing out on). One of the most common skin conditions in Singapore, baby eczema (or atopic dermatitis) is characterized by red, dry and itchy skin that can appear anywhere on the body, but mostly shows up on the cheeks, arms and legs. According to a 2016 report by The New Paper, the condition affects up to six in ten infants within the first year of their lives, and almost nine in 10 by the age of five.
Whilst the numbers are certainly a downer, we’re relieved to know baby and toddler eczema can be managed naturally, and that Aveeno’s newly launched Baby Dermexa range (also known as Eczema Therapy in the U.S) has been specially created to protect your baby’s skin and relieve eczema symptoms. Aveeno’s baby skincare products arrived in Singapore around a year ago, and we’ve been thoroughly impressed by their quality and gentleness on sensitive skin.
So what are these Aveeno newbies? There’s Aveeno Baby Dermexa Moisturizing Cream, Moisturizing Wash and Bath Treatment (which uses the same formula discovered by the founders of Aveeno more than 65 years ago!). All products can be used in tandem with each other, and they work to protect and restore moisture to your baby’s eczema-prone skin. They’ve also acquired some serious street cred, having been given a seal of approval by the National Eczema Association in the U.S.
Of course, the contents of a bottle of cream or body wash are just as important as how much it’s been raved about. Which is why we were happy to find out that Aveeno uses natural ingredients, drawing from the healing properties of oats. More specifically, we’re talking natural colloidal oatmeal to seal in skin moisture, oat essence (Avenanthramides) to soothe itchiness, and ceramide that helps protect skin from external irritation. Sure, it’s strange to think of this healthy breakfast fave as something you’d apply to your bub’s bod, but clinical research has shown the benefits of oatmeal in calming allergy or eczema prone skin, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. It might just be time to slather on some of that grainy goodness!
Aside from being packed with natural ingredients, the Baby Dermexa range is tried and tested as well. A 12-week clinical trial* was conducted in Europe, with eczema patients comprising of babies, children and adults testing out Aveeno Baby Dermexa Moisturizing Cream twice daily. Results show that after just 12 weeks of using the cream, patients found a 65% improvement in dryness and itching. 100% of patients also reported improved skin hydration.
Given these great results, if you’ve got a little person suffering from eczema, it’s worth giving Aveeno Baby Dermexa a go. Time to get back to those delicious baby snuggles.
