If you’ve ever thought tuition centres seem like just another way to make the school day longer, we’d like to invite you to reconsider: We recently spent time with some of the families and staff at The Learning Lab, and found lots of happy kids and impressed parents who appreciate the centre’s ‘real world’ approach to learning, and the fact that the teachers don’t just love to teach – they teach with love. You’re invited to step into the shoes of a TLL student, as we did, at one of their Experience Days in November and December. This is a rare chance to see what really goes on behind the scenes at one of Singapore’s top enrichment centres! We think you’ll be just as impressed as we were.
A little background for you: The Learning Lab was founded in 2001 and has since become one of the leading national providers of academic enrichment and tutorial programs for primary, secondary, and integrated program students in Singapore. The centre covers English, Chinese, Math and Sciences at all levels from preschool through to pre-tertiary. The Learning Lab consistently nurtures students to become some of the top performers at the PSLE, and members of its alumni have been admitted to such prestigious universities as Stanford, Yale, Oxford, NTU, NUS, and SMU, to name just a few. And, as a bonus, the facilities are very slick – just look at that science lab!
How does the centre achieve such impressive results? In our chats with the families who know, three great things were mentioned more than a few times:
- The curriculum incorporates current affairs and fundamental life skills such as presentation skills and goal setting, so kids are truly prepared for life after school. But it’s not just about preparing to go to work: we heard stories of the road to becoming an Olympic athlete, the importance of reducing plastic bag consumption, and even how the zebra gets its stripes!
- The teachers are truly nurturing, and passionate. They help bring lessons to life to keep kids engaged, and they serve as role models by encouraging curiosity and passion in the students. One mum told us of how a particular teacher often stayed back to help her daughter well past official school hours, simply because she wanted to help her get through a topic she found challenging.
- The Learning Lab believes in nurturing a love of learning in students. This is not the place to go to just tick off boxes at school – it’s one big workshop focusing on life values, curiosity, and an endless desire to learn.
