Tell us about the children you have attending the school?
We have three children attending Avondale Grammar School – our 10 year old daughter, Mia; our son William, who is 8; and our four-year-old, Sophia.
What were the most important factors for you in selecting a school?
The school community and quality of education were definitely the most important things to me. I wanted to be sure that whichever school we chose, the kids would be nurtured. Because AGS is a small school, I felt the chance for this to happen was much greater.
How has the school lived up to your expectations?
It has exceeded our expectations. Our kids are so happy at AGS, thanks to the wonderful teachers and staff! They have such high energy levels and are very dedicated to educating the kids for the future.
What do your children like most about attending this school?
They’ve made friends in the school, and they like the teachers and the staff, who play such an important role in the kids’ everyday life. I love hearing about the interesting, cool, and amazing things they do in class…I hear the most about technology, music and PE. The surrounds and the environment also makes them excited about school everyday.
Are you satisfied with the level of communication you receive from the school and how they engage parents?
Yes, the communication is very open and the staff are approachable. All the staff know each child by name, which is impressive. I enjoy that whenever I see a teacher, they quickly relay a golden snippet of what one of my kids have achieved.
How much homework is expected of your child/children?
Mia and Will are expected to do about 2-3 hours per week, depending on the projects and tasks they have on. A lot of it comprises revision of what they have done, so it really reinforces what has taken place in the classroom.
What sort of curriculum does this school offer?
The curriculum followed is Australian and fits nicely into the calendar year. The school does well under Australian NAPLAN testing and the teachers are constantly updating their skills with a variety of courses.
Do your children participate in any extra-curricular activities at the school?
They are part of the choir and my eldest has had lead roles in the school musical, including Alice In Wonderland, which was wonderful! They have also been involved in Kupa Hakka group (New Zealand Haka), the student representative committee, music and sports like swimming, cross country, soccer, basketball and netball.
What advice would you give other parents trying to choose a school?
Do what is best for the kids! For me, I’m glad I selected a place that allows my children to explore their interests, combat their fears safely, get an ‘extended’ education, and direct their energy positively. I see it as a success that my son has been able to beat stage fright with the help of a nurturing environment and teachers and is now a confident public speaker.
What do you value most about the school?
So many things! First and foremost, the education delivered by the dedicated teachers is terrific. I also really like the small class sizes and teacher to student ratio. The Chinese program is amazing – the kids are gaining a great understanding of the language. Overall, the children are happy and stimulated, and there is a great community spirit.
